1958 Poster In 1958, Sweden at long last embraced the professionalism which enabled their English manager, George Raynor, to recall their best players from Italian clubs, and, being the host nation, they had a real chance of success.

The Munich air crash of 6th February did not only affect Manchester United and England. Matt Busby had contributed to Scotland's qualification (at Spain's expense), and would have managed them in Sweden had he not been too injured to be there.

In the end, it was the usual selection panel, chaired by Mr Waters of St Mirren; their trainer Dawson Walker looked after the team on the pitch. The Welsh manager, Jimmy Murphy, luckily missed Munich because, the night before, Wales had eliminated Israel 2-0 (4-0 aggregate) at Cardiff.

Wales only made a full UK contingent in the finals because no other Asian-African team would play Israel, forcing FIFA into a lottery of all runners-up to meet them in a unique two-leg play-off. (Uruguay proudly declined to be included in the draw)

Northern Ireland went to Sweden without the skilful Jackie Blanchflower. Having helped them knock out the powerful Italian's, his injuries ended his footballing ambitions.

But it was the England team who were permanently deprived of their three mainstays - of left-back Roger Byrne (33 caps), midfield colossus Duncan Edwards (18 caps, 5 goals), and powerful heading and shooting centre forward, Tommy Taylor (19 caps 16 goals).

Forced to rethink and reorganise the most, they were pasted 5-0 by Yugoslavia in Belgrade on 11 May.

France were not considered one of the favourites, but would shock everybody by winning third place, and third place was where Moroccan born forward Just Fontaine was in the pecking order for places, until striker Rene Bliard kicked the ground so badly he was out of the tournament.

At only 24, Fontaine would become the record breaking goalscorer of this and any World Cup finals, with 13 goals in six matches.

Hungary were a mere shadow of the team that had thrashed England at Wembley just two years previously, largely because Honved happened to be on tour when the 'revolution' began at home. Puskas, Kocsis, and Czibor never played for their national side again.

West Germany, the cup holders, had lost seven players from their triumph in Berne, but Fritz Walter (37), a sobered up Rahn, and new boy Seeler at centre-forward; plus two tree-trunks in the shapes of Horst Szymaniak and Herbert Erhardt at the back, made sure they were no pushovers.

The Soviets qualified at the first time of asking and were the reigning Olympic champions.

Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia, were the other Europeans. Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, from South America, and Mexico made up the 16. Of these, Argentina had scraped through their group after losing to lowly Bolivia, and were missing four brilliant new forwards, Humberto Maschio (24), Antonio Valentin Angelillo (20), Ernesto Grillo, and Enrique Omar Sivori (21) - all poached by Italy.

The slight favourites were Brazil, with a 4-2-4 system, a banana legged Garrincha, and a useful new lad, nicknamed Pele.

It was the first time Northern Ireland had faced the Germans (and the other two teams in the group), and they played their best game of the tournament earning themselves a playoff.
