Lifeguard Station

We arrived at the lifeguard station just after stage four and saw the cars in a long procession. What was happening? The live commentry soon explained the situation. The procession and subsequent balloon release was to remember Richie Pearl a long standing member of Wallasey Motor club who lost a battle against illness.

Picture Description
I am not sure if everyone knew about the procession because car 27 came screeching around the hairpin almost hitting car 24.
Fortunately they managed to stop just in time... maybe they were just being exuberant?. At the end of the procession as a sign of respect there was a balloon release and then the next rally stage started.
Car 1, a Hyrundai Accent WRC with a 1998cc engine driven by John Stone / Lee Carter was the first car around the circuit.
I noticed that the post on the hairpin was missing (apart from a small stump covered in a traffic cone). I am not sure what happened to the post.

Car 4, a Darrian T9 (2400 CC) driven by Rob Dick / Barry Green got into difficulties and was forced to retire.
Car 26 was a BMW M3 driven by Andy Leech and John Simkiss. I don't remember seeing a BMW in any previous races.
Car 42, a Talbot Sunbeam (1998cc) driven by Malcolm Boyd and J McCaffery spun completely round when applying the hand brake at the hairpin.
Some of the drivers were fiercly competitive. See how close car 43 (Ford Escort Mk2 1993cc) got to car car 45 (Morris Mini 1052cc).
