Books of the Bible

The bible is split into two parts:
1) The Old Testament - before the birth of Jesus the messiah.
2) The New Testament - begins with the birth of Jesus the promised messiah, documents his ministry and the teaching of the apostles.


The Old Testament
Genesis The Creation of the earth.
The fall of man through Adam.
Cain and Abel
Noah and the Flood
Abraham - living by faith (not works).
Joseph sold into slavery in Egypt but ends up Pharoah's number 2.
Exodus Moses leads the Israelites out from Egypt, crossing the Red Sea and journeying towards the promised land.
Leviticus The priestly rules for the different types of offerings.
Numbers A census of the Israelites.
Deuteronomy Spying out the promised land. The Ten Commandments. The death of Moses on Mount Nebo opposite Jericho.
Joshua Crossing the River Jordan and entering the promised land.
Judges The judges who ruled Israel
Ruth How Ruth, a Moabite and her mother-in-law travelled from Moab to Bethlehem.
I Samuel The birth of Samuel. The Ark of the Covenant is returned to Israel. Saul annointed by Samuel as King of Israel. Samuel annoints David as King. David kills Goliath. David in Exile. The death of Saul.
II Samuel David anointed King over Judah. David becomes King over Israel. The Death of David.
I Kings King David makes his son Solomon King. Solomon builds the temple. The Ark is brought to the temple. The death of Solomon. The Israelites are divided into two kingdoms Judah and Israel. Kings
II Kings The two kingdoms continue to fall into decline. A few good kings such as Joash, Hezekiah and Josiah slow the decline. The fall of Jerusalem and the exile in Babylon. Kings
I Chronicles Historical records. From Adam, Noah, Abraham, Israel and the twelve tribes. The ark returned to Jerusalem. David made king.
II Chronicles Historical records. King Solomon and the kings of Judah and Israel.
Ezra King Cyrus of Persia helps the exiles return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple.
Nehemiah Rebuilding Jerusalem. Ezra read the law.
Esther Esther made Queen while exiled in Susa.
Job How Job was blessed by God. How the Devil destroyed everything Job had to try to tempt Job to sin. How Job stuck his ground despite financial disasters, having his children killed and having his health fail. How God rewarded Job for remaining steadfast.
Psalms God's wisdom expressed as verses. Many hymns, praise and worship songs were based on this book.
Proverbs The proverbs of Solomon.
Ecclesiastes The wisdom of Solomon
Song of Songs Solomon's Song of Songs.
Isaiah The visions received by the prophet Isaiah. God's judgement on Israel and the nations. The coming of the Messiah is foretold.
Jeremiah Jeremiah receives the word of the Lord. Jeremiah tells the people to repent. Jeremiah tells the people they will return from captivity. The people of Israel go into captivity in Babylon.
Lamentations A poem lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem and calling on God for forgiveness.
Ezekiel Ezekiel is called by God to be a watchman for Israel while they are in captivity in Babylon. The destruction of Jerusalem foretold. The nations judged. Restoration of the temple foretold.
Daniel Daniel is exiled to Babylon. Daniel interprets the King's dream. The writing is on the wall for King Belshazzar. Daniel in the den of lions. Daniel's visions.
Hosea Hosea calls for the people to return to God, ending their adulterous relationship with false gods. A call for repentance to bring blessing.
Joel A call for repentance. The nations judged. Blessings for God's people.
Amos The nations judge for attacking Israel. Judgement on Israel. A call for repentance. Israel to be destroyed then restored.
Obadiah The vision of Obadiah. Warning against pride. The exiles will return.
Jonah The reluctant prophet. God told Jonah to travel to Ninevah and tell the people to repent. Jonah, rebelled, but God made sure he still arrived a Ninevah after being thrown off a boat and swallowed by a fish.
Micah False prophets and leaders rebuked. The mountain of the Lord. The time for rebuilding has come.
Nahum God's anger against Ninevah for taking Judah into exile. The fall of Ninevah foretold.
Habakkuk Habakkuk's prayer.
Zephaniah Warning of future destruction. Promise of restoration.
Haggai A call to build the house of the Lord.
Zechariah A call to return to the Lord.
Malachi The day of judgement. Robbing God. A call to repent.

Acts The acts of the apostles after the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Note that in the Roman Catholic versions of the bible some of books have different names
