Journal - December 2003
Wednesday 31st - New Year's Eve
In the evening I went to my parents to celebrate the new year. Quite a few of the neighbours came. The next door neighbour also had a party so people tended to circulate between the two houses. Lots of people set off fireworks at midnight including the next door neighbour. We stood outside under the patio heater keeping warm from the sleet, listening to pop music (I won't meantion who kept playing David Cassidy) and watching the fireworks. We even had champagne to celebrate the arrival of the new year.
Tuesday 30th
My parents and one of my aunts went on a walk to Hibre Island. Timing is very important when walking to Hibre as it is only possible to get there at low tide. They wrapped up well as it was cold. The frost lasted all day on the bits of my lawn which didn't get direct sunlight.

In the evening I cooked a meal for my close relatives who live locally and my next door neighbour. There was a slight delay with the starter course, everyone was sat at the table, everyone had a drink, the pate was there, the salad was there but the toast wasn't ready. It is amazing how long the toaster takes when you have guests waiting!
Monday 29th
It was really cold all day. In the evening after coming out of the gym my car had ice on the inside of the windscreen.
Sunday 28th
I had been planning to do some more work on my bathroom but I decided to have a rest. In the evening I watched the film Star Trek - Nemesis where the captain has to resolve a tricky situation involving the Romulans, the Revans and the Federation.
Saturday 27th
A large group of people from church went on a walk. Quite a few of us climbed Thor's Stone which is a large piece of sandstone. I guess it got its name when there was a Viking settlement in the area. We noticed something unusual in a garden, it wasn't a sport car, someone had a helicopter.
Later in the day I heard that yesterday there had been a very serious earth quake in Iran which killed thousands around the city of Bam which has been reduced to rubble.
Friday 26th - Boxing Day
Before you ask, I don't know why it is called boxing day. In the afternoon we went on a walk in a park. We saw that the barge that is going to carry plane wings is still under construction. In the evening we had another large meal and I felt strangely sleepy.
Thursday 25th - Christmas Day
We had a short service at the church building. I had a couple of things to check before the meeting as we made quite a few changes for the Christmas show.
I had a huge Christmas meal at my parents house. In the evening we went to a relation's house for another meal. I was beginning to feel like a beached whale.
The British Beagle "landed" on Mars, but didn't signal its arrival.
Wednesday 24th
I managed to complete the urgent work and submit it to the test department. At lunch time many of the people at work went to a local pub. We were issued vouchers for 3 free drinks and there was a buffet which was a nice touch.
In the evening I found myself wrapping presents and then packing a bag before driving to my parents to stay there for Christmas and Boxing day.
Tuesday 23rd
One of the screens I was working on became rather urgent. Guess who stayed late at work?
Monday 22nd
This year I planned to wrap all the present nice and early. By the time I got home from a day in the office followed by a workout in the gym I decided the presents could wait.
Sunday 21st
My parents came to see the church production of A Heart for Christmas. Everything turned out fine despite "Jesus" arriving late and the chap who was the star guiding the wise men splitting his trousers.
Saturday 20th
We had a dress rehersal for the church Christmas production. Everyone was dressed up in costumes but we had a slight delay when the wise men couldn't find their presents

One of my friends came to visit me. I won't be seeing him again for a while as he is going to Australia with his wife for almost a month.
Friday 19th
The coprolite database server at work crashed while I was investigating some data irregularities. Fortunately the DBAs were able to bring the database back quickly.
Late in the morning I discovered that my sign in time for yesterday had been adjusted to 9am (I had arrived at quarter past nine due to the traffic chaos). I later discovered that everyone who arrived after 9am had their time adjusted, which was a pleasant surprise.
Thursday 18th
In a local paper I spotted an advert for a night club. Recognise the photograph?

It was seriously cold in the morning and my car was covered in a thin layer of ice. I set off cautiously to work.
As I approached the tunnel exit in Liverpool the traffic ground to a halt. I suspected an incident as normally the traffic is not so busy early in the morning, it was only just after 8am. I turned on the radio and soon discovered the cause of the traffic gridlock. Several protesters dressed as santa clause had climbed onto the roof of a foot bridge crossing the strand, a dual carriageway with four lanes going each way and one of the busiest roads in Liverpool. The police closed the strand forcing eight lanes of traffic to travel down side streets. Later in the morning police arrested the five protesters.
Wednesday 17th
Tuesday 16th
In the evening I visited my parents and dropped off their Christmas cards.
Monday 15th
Sunday 14th
Saddam Hussein was captured by American soldiers.
Saturday 13th
After visiting a local supermarket for my weekly shopping I did some more work around the house. I spent most of the day removing paint from the bathroom ceiling.
In the evening I went to the church Christmas meal. After the meal one of the worship team entertained us by singing to backing tracks, a bit like "stars in their eyes" tv show.
Friday 12th
After work quite a few people on the freight team went to a pub near work. Normally the arrangement is for the first drink at the bar to be free, this time there was a buffet too! I didn't stay very long as I wanted to arrive at the gym before it closed.
It was raining when I walked back to my car (I hadn't drunk any alcohol), fortunately this time my car wasn't in a puddle - the drainage in the car park isn't very good.
Thursday 11th
In the evening some friends from church came round. I was a little bit concerned because I was running low on milk, but fortunately I had enough milk for everyone to have a drink of tea.
Wednesday 10th
I started work on a small tidying up exercise at work. I discovered quite a few loose ends and stayed late at work.
Tuesday 9th
I decided to put up my Christmas tree. I retrieved it from the loft and decorated the tree. I was surprised it took most of the evening, it was almost ten pm when I finished.
Monday 8th
I was back in work again.
Sunday 7th
It took me slightly longer to get ready for church, my car was covered in frost. I was quite surprised to see someone drive past in an open topped car.
Saturday 6th
While I was at my parents house having an evening meal, my brother John rang for a chat. Winter has arrived in Boston as it was snowing.
Friday 5th
After spending most of the day removing paint from my bathroom ceiling I did a quick session at the gym. The police CSI team were still in residence at the flats near the gym. It is quite unpleasant to think that I may have walked past someone who was planning a murder.
In the evening I watched a film called Solaris it reminded me of blade runner. It was quite a dark film with more than a few unexpected twists in the plot. It started with a psycologist (George Clooney) going to a space station to investigate strange things happening. The rest of the film is about his memories and what happened when he met the crew.
Thursday 4th
I spent most of the morning removing paint from my bathroom ceiling. Despite the fact that the paint is peeling it is pretty tough to remove!
For a break I went with my parents to a show at a local church hall. There were lots of entertaining acts including the local primary school choir. It is hard to believe that I was once that young.
In the evening I spent rather longer than I anticipated at the gym. Someone in nearby flats died suspicously and the police closed the road.
Wednesday 3rd
Winter must have arrived as there are hardly any leaves left on the trees. I raked up the leaves from my back garden. I produced several mounds of wet leaves but there still seemed to be lots of leaves on the lawn. I spent a couple of hours removing loose paint from the bathroom ceiling. After using the wallpaper stripper on the paint I tend to leave things for a while to let the water soak in and loosen the paint.
Tuesday 2nd
After all of yesterdays rain I had a quick walk around the garden. I was quite surprised to see that the grass is still growing... December is supposed to be winter.
Monday 1st
I got up later than usual but that was OK because I am off work this week. In the morning I went to the church building and setup the PA so someone could practise singing to backing tracks for the Christmas meal. Afterwards I ventured to the shops to purchase some presents for Christmas.
