Journal - August 2005
Wednesday 31st
I went for a walk in Wales with my parents. After a brief pit stop at home I went to the gym and musicians.
Tuesday 30th
One of my aunts went to Boston to visit my brother and his wife.
Monday 29th
Katrina, which had been downgraded from a class 5 hurricane to a class 4 hurricane, made landfall near New Orleans. About 80% of the city was flooded when the levees, which were designed to handle class 3 hurricanes, were breached.
Sunday 28th
Many of the church members had gone to the bible weekend in Swansea so we didn't have a church service on Sunday morning. I took the opportunity to drive to Woodside and took a few pictures of the liner Princendam which is visiting for the day. In the background I could see Liverpool. When the wind was in the right direction I could hear people doing sound checks for the Mathew Street festival.
Saturday 27th
I did a small amount of tidying up in my garden. My next door neighbour Wilf is back from visiting his daughter in the Channel Islands and he gave me some tomatoes. I look forward to eating them later in the week because home grown tomatoes are so tasty.
In the evening I went to my aunt's for tea. On Tuesday she is travelling to visit my brother and his wife in Boston. She is hoping to go whale watching while she is over there.
Friday 26th
All the people at risk had appointments arranged. I went to my meeting in the afternoon and discovered that I was going to be made redundant. After work lots of us went to the aptly named Slaughterhouse pub. It was a relief in a way because the last month had been unpleasant with this hanging over me. Now I can concentrate on getting a new job.
Thursday 25th
I took a day off work to get a few things done around the house.
Wednesday 24th
The passenger steam ship Balmoral which specialises in short trips was in the news. It hit an underwater object flooding the engine room. Fortunately no passengers were onboard and the Swansea coastguard only had to coordinate the evacuation of the crew. Marine welders made temporary repairs to stop the ship taking on water. I took this picture in June during the 2005 Mersey River Festival.
Tuesday 23rd
Monday 22nd
Sunday 21st
F1 racing at a new circuit in Turkey. The new track was quite complicated which making driving challenging and consequently interesting for the crowd.
Saturday 20th
I went to see a powerboat race on the River Mersey. My camera struggled to take a pictures of the fast moving power boats at the other side of the river. At some time in the future I will have to invest in a digital camera with more than 3* optical zoom.
Friday 19th
At lunchtime I caught a picture of one of the powerboats (Heights of Abraham) trying out the course. Tomorrow I intend to watch the powerboats race with one of my brothers.
Thursday 18th
Wednesday 17th
I heard that there are going to be powerboat races over the weekend on the River Mersey.
After the gym I was waiting for the musicians to arrive. I was beginning to think I had got the date wrong, but then everyone arrived.
Tuesday 16th
Monday 15th
I didn't feel particularly full of energy on Monday, so instead of going to the gym I went straight home.
Sunday 14th
Saturday 13th
I went for another walk in Snowdonia, this time I went up the Devil's Kitchen. Before you ask, it is a mountain pass in Snowdonia not a restaurant!
Friday 12th
Earlier in the week it was predicted that today would be the hottest day of the year. When I looked out of the window in the morning I could see that things were not quite as predicted... it was dark and overcast. Later in the afternoon the weather improved. When I caught the ferry home in the evening it was bright and sunny. Sitting on the deck of the ferry I felt like I was on holiday.
Thursday 11th
Wednesday 10th
The ferry was full again, apparently there was a signaling problem with the trains.
No musicans tonight so after a quick workout at the gym I came home and updated my journal. Sorry I about the lack of pictures but for obvious reasons the situation at work has taken a little while to get used to!
Tuesday 9th
Someone from work has set up a web site so that people who have been made redundant from work can stay in contact.
After work I topped up the water in the pond and did some gardening around the pond.
Monday 8th
The ferry on the way home was busy again, well it is Summer and there is some engineering work on part of the Wirral line for the next few weeks. I had to settle for a deck seat in the middle. Usually I try to sit on stern which has a panoramic view.
Sunday 7th
My parents visited me in the afternoon and we sat outside enjoying the sun.
After they left I cut the grass, but this didn't take long as the weather has been so dry recently.
Saturday 6th
In the evening I went to my parents for tea.
Friday 5th
Almost the weekend!
Thursday 4th
I went to a prayer meeting at church in the evening. Harry who had the accident with a chainsaw was there and his hand was in a much smaller bandage and he seemed to be on the road to recovery.
Wednesday 3rd
I made it to the gym and musicians despite having a tough day at work.
Tuesday 2nd
The space port at Seacombe oppened. They do have rockets there, but they are exibits so you can't catch a weekend return to the moon. The space port is an education centre.
I updated my CV.
Monday 1st
When I arrived in work there were lots of upset people. Quite a few people had been told they were at risk, some people had been told they were safe and lots like me still didn't know.
I was invited to see one of the directors and was told that I was at risk but a final decision won't be made until the 26th August!
