Journal - June 2006
Friday 30th
I cemented more paving stones together.
The clippers arrived in New York today, Uniquely Singapore was 1st to arrive. There is a web cam showing the North Cove Marina where the clippers will be berthed. Some more tall ships arrived in Liverpool.
Since it was had turned overcast and my car was dirty I washed it by hand. I discovered that the rust on the back door and the doorwell was getting worse :-(
Thursday 29th
I continued spacing out the paving stones it was really hot so it took longer than anticpated. In the evening I cemented a few of them together.
Wednesday 28th
My brother John and his wife Alicia flew back to the USA.
I had a telephone interview. It seemed to go OK, I guess I will find out in a few days.
I started spacing out paving stones in the back garden so that they can be cemented together to discourage the growth of weeds.
Tuesday 27th
I spent most of the morning updating my web site with pictures of the tall ships.
I am still having difficulty getting the re-direction from the church domain to the web site working.
In the afternoon I went Thornton Hough to see the scarecrow festival. Some of the local schools submitted entries such as the dalek seen here attacking my mum.
Monday 26th
Fernando Alonso won the Canadian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher came 2nd, Kimi Raikkonen came 3rd... No! I wasn't quick enough to get out of bed to turn off my clock radio. I decided to watch the race but it wasn't quite the same knowing the final result. The race was quite dramatic with several cars colliding in the early stages. Only 15 of the 22 cars were given finish positions. Three cars retired after crashing into walls around the circuit: T Sato, JP Montoya & J Villeneuve.
I helped someone I know from church prepare for their relative's wedding.
I went to my parent's house for tea. Alicia cooked lassagne and it was yummy.
Sunday 25th
I didn't sleep very well... I must have been worried about having to get up early. Well I got up in time to arrive at church for the 9am musicians rehersal, though I was still sleepy.
In the afternoon I set the video to record the grand prix then went for a walk up Helsby Hill. Later we went for a meal at my brother's house in Warrington.
Saturday 24th
I got up as usual in the morning. I had a shower and got dressed. I decided it was time to put the bedding in the wash so I put the washing in the basket and carried it downstairs. I could hear a strange buzzing sound. What could it be? Ooops, I realised I had openned the back door without switching off the alarm. I then thought to myself "Where did I put my keys?". I managed to switch the alarm off before it went into alarm mode.
There was some drama at the start of race ten for the Glasgow crew.
I went for a quick drive to see the kite festival and then went to a barbecue, we were relieved that the rain stayed away.
Friday 23rd
The clippers are scheduled to start their tenth race today.
I met a friend at lunch time and spotted the tall ship Zebu
Thursday 22nd
The tall ship Prince William arrived in the area. I wouldn't fancy climbing the rigging as it was rather windy when it arrived.
Wednesday 21st
I cleaned the heads on the video recorder and now it seems to be working OK. I fitted the new grid to my patio, so hopefully the rain will stay off to let the concrete set.
Tuesday 20th
I resolved some issues with the connect4 program and put the revised version of the game on the web.
In the evening I went to my parents house to tea, to see my brother and his wife. I gave two of my aunts a lift there.
Monday 19th
I heard that the clippers had arrived in Jamaica, completing race 9.
We had a few showers, which should help the pond in the garden which was getting rather shallow.
Sunday 18th
After a slightly damp walk I was rather embarrassed when the coat rack which has been under my stairs for nine years came off the wall dropping my guests coats onto the floor in a heap. Maybe it was the weight of the damp coats?
Saturday 17th
I continued my quest to find a shop that sells metal gratings / grids. I wanted to improved the drainage on the patio area without risking people braking a plastic grid and injuring themselves. After another false start I found a suitable grating... now I just have to connect it up to the land drain.
In the evening I went to a relatives birthday party.
Friday 16th
I went for tea at my parents. When I was there I discovered that earlier in the day there had been a cycling incident which resulted in Alicia having a collection of bruises.
Thursday 15th
I went on the internet and checked that their flight DL154 was still on schedule. A bit later in the morning I checked again and the plane had arrived at Manchester Airport. No I hadn't forgotten to pick them up, my parents were collecting them from the airport.
Wednesday 14th
I added a minor improvement to the connect four game making it less easy to beat.
Tomorrow my brother John and his wife Alicia are arriving.
Tuesday 13th
I heard that clippers will be berthing at the Shelter Bay Marina across the bay from Colon (Caribbean end of the Panama Canal) to prepare for the race start.
I looked on the AIS web site. I spotted a tug near where HMS Onyx was berthed. I drove to the docks to see what was happening as I heard that the submarine might be leaving.
Monday 12th
I visited my parents.
I heard that the first five clippers have started transitting the Panama Canal. The rest are berthed at Flemenco Marina which overlooks the Pacific entrance to the canal.

In the evening I cemented several paving stones together around the drain inspection pit at the rear of the house.
Sunday 11th
In the evening I watched the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. At the end of the race Alonso stood on the top step again. Shumacher (Michael) was next with Kimi Raikkonen. Jenson didn't finish due to an oil leak which caused him to spin off the track.
Saturday 10th
My parents returned home from their holiday in Spain.
Friday 9th
I got the basic functionality working for a simple connect four game.
The mirror did stay on over night but it was still loose so I took it off and re-attached it.
My Dad left a message on the answer phone to say they are nearly in Portsmouth.
Thursday 8th
The windscreen mirror fell off again. I signed on. I had been thinking of doing a part time job such as delivering papers to boost my funds but I was advised at the job centre anything over £5 gets taken off my benefits. I really do need a proper job before I run out of savings.
Wednesday 7th
I started working on a computer game.
My windscreen mirror fell off. I stuck it back on to go to the gym and musicians but it was still loose.
Tuesday 6th
I heard that both companies that operate ro-ro ferries from Liverpool Docks are planning to each put another ship on the Dublin route.
Monday 5th
I have been learning Javascript so I set myself an exercise to set up a Quiz section.
Sunday 4th
I woke up with my back feeling a bit stiff. I suspect yesterdays digging may have had something to do with it. I still managed to cut the grass on all 3 lawns in the afternoon.
I found out that several liners will be visiting the River Mersey this year.
Saturday 3rd
The birthday of my youngest brother John.
After doing some shopping I spent much of the day deepening the far end of the pond using a trowel. There should be more room for the frogs and newts now.
Friday 2nd
I gave a bull rush from my pond to a relative without getting pond water in my car. I went to the gym but it was a bit warm for a full workout.
I heard that break up of the historic warships has begun with the sale of the submarine HMS Onyx.
Thursday 1st June
All the clippers have reached the finish line but I suspect they may be late arriving at Panama due to tropical storm Aletta.
It won't be long before my parents return from Spain and my brother John with his wife Alicia come to visit.
John Prescott the deputy PM gave up his Dorneywood home after being photographed playing croquet there. The photograph was release while the PM was on holiday giving the impression that John Prescott was playing croquet when he was supposed to be running the country.
I signed on at the job centre. Gave out the advanced motorist magazines. I did some more tidying up of the pond. I fitted the latch to the openning window in the side porch / utility room. After all that activity I felt like relaxing in the bath.
