Chester
The city is very old, and many of the walls date back to Roman times. In more recent times Chester was used as the base for the English army for its conquest of the principality of Wales. In the center of Chester you often look conspicuous if you don't carry a camera due to the large number of tourists visiting.
One of the largest zoos in the world is located here. Many rare species breed successfully, Karha the first elephant born in captivity was born here. Unfortunately, Karha (who was rejected by her mother) has since died. On a more upbeat note another baby elephant was born on first of January 1998 at Chester.
The zoo is rather large and is split into east and west. Despite foot and mouth (which only effects animals with cloven hooves), the zoo is open (May 2001).
