Places of Interest

The region surrounding the Wirral peninsula has a played an important part through history. Some of the more significant locations are hightlighted below.





Location Details
1 - Fort Perch (New Brighton) The last shot of the American Civil war was fired from Fort Perch when the last Southern (Confederate) ship Shenandoah surrendered to the British.

The roads in New Brighton promenade are often closed in the Summer to allow street racing.
2 - Ship Yards The Alabama was built by one of these ship yards as blockade runner in May 1862 for the Confederates in the American Civil War. She was sunk by cannon fire off Cherbourg, France in 1864.
Here large ships such as car ferries can be put in dry dock for refurbishing.
3 - River Mersey Shipping.

4 - Ship Yards Where small ships such as tugs + barges are built.
5 - Bromborough Where most of the Hyland family live, near the Queen Elizabeth II Docks at the entrance to the Manchester Ship Canal.
6 - Port Sunlight Home of a large manufacturer of washing powders and soap products
7 - Ferries To the Isle of Man, Ireland (Dublin and Belfast) and across the River Mersey.
8 Docks Birkenhead and Wallasey Docks
9 - Stanlow Manufacturing complex The biggest oil refineary in Europe.
10 - Liverpool (Speke) Airport. Gateway to the Isle of Man, Ireland and an increasing number of holiday destinations on mainland Europe.
11 - Widnes Paul Simon wrote "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" - maybe hinting at the split to occur between Simon and Garfunkel.
12 - Park Gate Handel waited in vain for a ship to carry him to Ireland. While waiting he started composing his most famous piece of music - Handel's Messiah.
13 - Liverpool Liverpool Home of the Beatles and the HQ for the Battle of the Atlantic (WW2). There are two Cathedrals, several Universities and the college of Performing Arts (funded by Paul McCartney). Many of the British insurance companies have their HQs on the Liverpool waterfront. A sizeable percentage of the world's cotton trade is controlled electronically from Liverpool. The picture below shows Liverpool's historic waterfront near the Pierhead.

The Liver Building shown in the dark looks like it belongs on the set for Batman.

One of the famous buildings located in Liverpool is Saint George's Hall (below) which looks like it should be located in Rome.

14 - Helsby Hill Formerly a sea cliff before the Mersey silted up, it was here that Edmund Hillary prepared for conquering Mount Everest.
15 - Heswall Home of several football players.
16 - Chester the walled city.
17 - Raby Mere Where many anglers enjoy a quiet day. Other people gather here to enjoy the scenery and to feed the ducks.
18 - West Kirby The boating lake is popular with wind surfers. When the tide is out it is possible to walk to nearby Hibre Island bird sanctuary.
19 - Gas Rig Offshore Drilling
20 - Getting places Ferries across the Irish Sea and local rail services.

22 - Hoylake The Hoylake and West Kirby lifeboat station is located here. In August (2001) there was an open day.
