Tall Ships 2008

The Tall ships dock in the Albert and Wellington Docks from July 18 to July 20. The tall ships left in a Parade of Sail on July 21st.

Many of these tall ships carry modern navigational aids. On Tuesday 15th July I noticed that the Lord Nelson had arrived (early in Wellington Dock) and was sending an AIS signal from the docks. Later in the day I spotted another tall ship TS Royalist in the Albert Dock.

We travelled by public transport to Liverpool and visited the new shopping centre. Lots of other people had the same idea. There seemed to be lamb bananas all over the place. I purchased an official program of events.

As part of the celebrations there wll be several Royal Navy ships present over the weekend:
RFA Lyme Bay
HMS Argyll
HMS Grimsby
HMS Mersey

The largest ship was RFA Lyme Bay which berthed at the cruise terminal. The ship was open to the public.

ALBERT DOCK
Smaller ships tend to be berthed in the
Albert Dock.

There were huge crowds around the Albert Dock complex and you had to join a queue to see the ships.

In the unlikely event of anyone falling into the dock help was at hand. Note that their radar was folded down so that they fitted under the low bridges.

WELLINGTON DOCK
The larger ships tend to berth in Wellington Dock. This year I was not able to visit the larger ships as I had other commitments. Last year all the
tall ships berthed here.

PARADE OF SAIL
On Monday afternoon I drove to New Brighton to see the ships leave. It took a while to find a parking space.

We were a little late arriving so we didn't get the best viewing point so the images are a little on the fuzzy side. The wind was blowing from the north against the tall ships so most of them took their sails down and used engine power.
Cisne Branco was built in Amsterdam, launched in 1999 is part of the Brazilian navy and is based in Rio de Janeiro.
In the background is Seaforth container terminal. Note the size of the wind turbine.
Alexander Von Humboldt was launched in 1906.
Cuauhtemoc was built in Spain 1981-1982 and is part of the Mexican Navy. Has previously won 2 tall ships races.
Eendracht was built in 1989 and she is equipped with the latest technology such as self furling sails and air conditioning for the crew.
Mir was built in 1927 and is one of the larger tall ships (108.8 metres). She is based in St Petersburg.
