Battle of Atlantic Celebrations



In early May 2003 the 60th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic was celebrated. The aircraft carrier Invincible was moored mid-river.


Other ships berthed in the docks at both sides of the river. Some of the smaller ships berthed in the Albert Dock complex while several other ships berthed in Wallasey Docks.

The eagle eyed may have noticed the elderly tug in the background.
The Royal Navy mine sweeper HMS Walney also berthed in the Albert Dock complex.
As part of the celebrations, there was a mock hostage rescue staged. A helicopter took off from HMS Invincible and rescued the hostages held on the fishing boat prince madoc.
This picture shows my brother standing by the Polish Frigate Orp Kaszub berthed in Wallasey Docks.
The Norwegian Navy's frigate HNoMS Trondheim was one of several ships open to the public over the bank holiday weekend. It was berthed in Wallasey Docks.
The French ship FS Latouche-Treville was one of the larger war ships berthed in Wallasey Docks. This ship was equipped with the much feared exocet missile system.
The German Frigate FGS Schleswig-Holstein was also equipped with the exocet missile system. This ship also berthed in Wallasey Docks.
