The River Mersey - Cruise Ships (2009)

Each year many cruise ships visit Liverpool. Some of the smaller cruise ships berth in Langton Dock, but most berth at the cruise ship terminal. In the past the ships had to anchor mid-river.

Black Prince
Fred Olsen are retiring the Black Prince later this year. Her farewell cruise is on 19th September.
I took this picture of her berthed in Langston Dock in April. Note the size of the wind turbine in the background.


The picture shown below was taken several years ago. I hope to have the opportunity of taking a better picture before the black prince sails off into the sunset for the last time.


Black Watch
Launched in 1971 as Royal Viking Star.She has also been known as Westward, Star Odyssey. In 1996 She was purchase by the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines and renamed Black Watch.
She has had several major refits. She was originally had a length of 177.7 but she has been lengthened to 205.47metres and her engines upgraded.
Dimensions (205.47 * 25.19 * 7.3 with a tonnage of 28221 GRT).

Queen Mary II
When launched in 2003 was the longest, widest and tallest passenger ship every built.
Dimensions: 345 * 41 (bridge wings 45) * 10 with a tonnage of 150,000. She has a heigh (keel to funnel) of 72m.
