New Buds

Here are a few pics. of the latest flower buds. These always seem to creep coyly out when you aren't looking, then shoot up to make a flower stem at about half an inch per day. Time to start feeding and watering a bit more. I use tomato fertiliser for its high potash content and low price. The plants seem to like it.

Note the flower buds come up from the side, not in the centre where the leaf growth rises. With a bit of encouragement, a big bulb can put up two or three stems. The reds are always a startling bright blood red.

The yellow one came with the name "Lemon Star" and is a delicate pale colour. The flash washed the colour out a bit, I had to re-colour the image but I think it is a fair match.

"Pink" on the label turned out an Apple Blossom - marvellous! One of my favourites and slightly scented.

The white one surprised me with only two blossoms on the first stem - but they were enormous!

I have to watch the stems stay upright, as they tend to lean towards the light from the window. If a bulb is a bit weedy I may take the stem off once the flowers have emerged at the top, they will do fine as a cut flower and the bulb will recover quicker.

Previous years flowers! Colourful pictures.
