Langholm Pipe Band
Pipe Major: Andrew Johnstone (aj@ritchie.softnet.co.uk)

The origins of the band are lost in the mists of time. Some band historians are of the opinion that the band is the oldest civilian band in Scotland, being formed around 1874. Although there were certainly pipers in the town at this time, playing at various functions, it is thought that the band first officially formed and organised under a constitution around 1919, with soldiers returning from the great War. The band has never achieved any great acclaim nationally, but has always been held in high esteem throughout the Scottish Borders. At present the playing strength is around 16 pipers and 10 drummers and the band plays at most of the major festivals in the locality, including the Langholm Common Riding. The band welcomes and supports new members. They take pride in the fact that they have a disproportionately large number of female musicians.
