What's my Team ??
I am a Murphy, a Hampshire resident, a British person, a European and a human of the planet Earth. I also belong to many other classes, for example, I am a mammal, an animal and a living thing. When a conflict arizes which 'team' should I support? For example, is a new road in Hampshire more important than the wildlife it destroys or is being British more important then being European? I consume energy, generate carbon dioxide and produce pollution which is bad for the earth and therefore bad for humankind. Which is more important - being a person or being a member of the human race??
As a person, all other people are opponents; as a Britan, people from other countries are opponents; as a mammal, all insects are opponents; as a member of the human race, it is nature and the laws of science which are the main opponents!
My sporting interests are focused on enjoying nature instead of competing against
fellow human beings. I
prefer those sports in which a 'human team' faces a challenge from nature
rather than those with a strong human-versus-human emphasis. For,example,
sub-aqua diving CANNOT be treated as a competitive sport - it is a sport in
which humans MUST cooperate together to achieve a common goal. My sailing
activities are therefore associated with enjoying the natural environment
instead of racing yachts round buoys.
Countries are useful
only as geographic entities. They have the disadvantage of creating artificial
boundaries between humans. Nature presents the human race with plenty of challenges
which only global 'teams' can solve. I believe that humanity should be tackling such
problems rather than expending effort on inter-human rivalry.
